Mural Arts’ Poetry Jam Session!

Here is a great event that came across my inbox today.  The Mural Arts program is holding a Jam session to celebrate Philadelphia’s African American history, traditions, and culture.

The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program is excited to present the Poetry Jam Session, a FREE, interactive, outdoor event celebrating the new Albert M. Greenfield
African American Iconic Images Collection, which honors Philadelphia’s African American history, traditions, and culture.

Five celebrated, Philadelphia-based poets — Greg “Just Greg” Corbin (Philadelphia Youth Poetry Movement/PYPM), Theodore Harris (muralist, poet, collagist), Trapeta B.
Mayson (Pew fellow, artist-in-residence at Art Sanctuary), Tamara Oakman (Coeditor/Co-Founder of Apiary, Executive Director of Light of Unity Association), and
Yolanda Wisher (Mural Arts Program’s Director of Art Education, Founder of Germantown Poetry Festival)—were commissioned to write pieces inspired by murals in
the Collection.

After the sharing their dynamic works, participants from the Philadelphia Youth Poetry Movement (PYPM) will take to the stage to share their poetic craft. Following the PYMP performers, the mic will be open to all poets who wish to present inspiring written and spoken works about murals in the Collection.

The Poetry Jam Session will be held outside of The Arts Garage in Francisville, in front of the ARTsolutely Awesome North Philly…Yeah!!! mural, completed in 2007 by
renown artist Marcus Akinlana. Yolanda Wisher will host this event and DJ Statik of the Illvibe Collective will provide music for everyone to enjoy. In addition, light refreshments will be served.
