Last night, Sigma Sound became the backdrop for a night of spoken word provided by Catzie of Yellow Rage and Philadelphia’s premiere spoken word recording artist, Ursula Rucker. DJ PHSH provided the mellow tunes to get everyone in a poetic mindset while vitaminwater supplied the audience with complimentary hydration and Heineken Light. There’s also a digital photobooth that lets you send photos in real time and share them with social networking sites.
Catzie shared a number of poems dedicated to her Laos culture and heritage. She expressed the struggle in being an Asian-American but demonstrated through poetry pride in her ancestry and her family’s grapple and triumph to seek refuge in the United States after war erupted in her country.
The night ended with Ursula Rucker accompanied by her guitarist, Jake Marelli, providing a moving performance. The subject of Rucker’s work was one of revolution, truth seeking, womanhood, frustration, and turmoil. Rucker’s style of poetry is a combination of song and spoken word resulting in an entertaining and heartfelt presentation.
