19-year old Queens Native Bryant Dope recently released “Champion Sound” song and video. The freshman lays down a strong two and a half-minute head-jolt track, which features a rugged Smiff-n-Wessun sample. Crisp, classic and distinctively New York, it’s been a short while since there’s been a rookie release this organic, especially in an age where “skinny jeans hip hop” swamp the lime-lights, it’s refreshing to hear battle-rap slang stutter over boom-bap basslines. Of course this wouldn’t really be as captivating, if the young gun didn’t nod at topics of marijuana, money and women. Appropriately, the visual take on the track is produced in lofi black and white, showing Bryant Dope rapping vigorously in boxing attire.
