Formed in 1987, in Philadelphia, PA, the legendary Roots Crew, consists of Black Thought (MC), Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson (drums), Kamal Gray (electronic keyboards), F. Knuckles (percussion), Captain Kirk Douglas (electronic guitar), Damon Bryson (sousaphone) and James Poyser (electronic keyboard). Having previously released twelve projects, The Roots have become one of the best known and most respected hip-hop acts in the business, winning four Grammy’s, including Best R&B Album for “Wake Up!,” Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for “Hang in There” (with John Legend) and Best Group or Duo R&B Vocal Performance for “Shine.” The ensemble was most recently nominated for Best Rap Album for the 2011 release of “undun.” In 2009, The Roots, named one of the greatest live bands around by both Spin and Rolling Stone, became the official house band on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” where they currently perform every Monday- Friday.
Three-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter, New York Times best selling poet, and critically acclaimed actress are only a few titles held by Jill Scott. Before having the #1 album in the country with her new album “The Light Of The Sun,” performing at The White House, being named People Magazine’s Top TV Breakout Star of 2010 and appearing on VH1 Divas alongside Aretha Franklin, the triple threat began her career collaborating with musical icons, The Roots, Will Smith, and Common in the late 90s. In 2000, she released her much anticipated debut record, “Who is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds, Vol. 1,” a double platinum album that earned Scott several Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. Never limited to music, Jill Scott is a true multimedia brand across books, clothing, TV and film. Most recently, she was cast as the lead character in the HBO/BBC mini-series “The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency,” a Peabody Award-winning show directed by the late Oscar Award-winning director Anthony Minghella. A consummate writer at heart, she penned “The Moments, The Minutes, The Hours,” a compilation of poems that instantly became a New York Times bestseller.
It’s been an interesting road from the mid 90s up until now,” says Slash. “I never stopped to think, ‘What am I going to do in the long term?’ Or ruminated on my solo career, where it was heading. I’ve just been jamming around, going wherever the muse has taken me. And this is the first time where I feel like I’m in the saddle and riding my own destiny with some genuine focus.”
For fans who’ve tracked the journey of the Guns N’ Roses lead guitarist since the release of “Appetite for Destruction” two days before his 22nd birthday 25 years ago this July, one can’t help but be radioactive with enthusiasm. “Apocalyptic Love” is not just a new record by the storied musician with the black top hat and magical gift for riff, for Slash and his three co-conspirators; it is, indeed, destiny. And everyone involved is poised for the ride. The liberated feel of “Apocalyptic Love” is evident throughout the LP’s 13 songs, as is the genuine chemistry between Slash and lead singer, Myles Kennedy.
Much to the delight of old and new fans, Slash’s resume builds along with his worldwide fan base. Since making history and amassing global sales in excess of 100 million units with Guns N’ Roses, returned with “Slash’s Snakepit” in 1994, followed by Velvet Revolver’s two hit LPs, 2005’s “Contraband” (for which the single, “Slither” won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock performance) and 2007’s “Libertad.” Finally, Slash reemerged with his groundbreaking, guest-star studded 2010 solo debut which included a cavalcade of venerable guest vocalists the likes of Iggy Pop, Ian Astbury and Ozzy Osbourne. In 2011, Slash was honored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce who named him as an official selection to receive a star in 2012 on Hollywood’s iconic Walk of Fame.
Aziz Ansari has quickly established his presence in the comedy world. He is currently starring in the Emmy nominated NBC series, “Parks and Recreation;” developing a number of films including voicing a character in theTwentieth Century Fox animated film “Epic,” as well as the comedy “This is the End” opposite Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, and James Franco and recently released his second hour-long standup special titled “Dangerously Delicious”. The Hollywood Reporter said that he “has become one of the most prolific writers and performers on the comedy scene in recent years” and Rolling Stone placed him on the cover of a special comedy issue labeling him “the funniest man under 30.” In addition, Paste Magazine has named him one of the “Top 10 Comedians of the Decade.” Ansari also has the much buzzed about gig as host of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards.
