Challenging Masculinity: COMME des GARÇONS Homme Plus 2016 Fall/Winter Collection

Rei Kawakubo’s COMME des GARÇONS Homme Plus imprint continues its irreverent streak of deconstructing the norms of masculine dress with its 2016 fall collection. Traditional formal pieces like blazers are adorned with clashing patterned sleeves, which are paired with silky floral skirts, flower crowns and boutonnières to test the fragility of masculinity. The beginning of the presentation challenges the kind of tweed suits traditionally worn to prom and similar formal events, while the latter end ventures into leather fetishism, further challenging the audience’s concepts of formal dress. Models did a lap with bouquets to close off the show.
