In the years since 2013’s landmark Acid Rap, Chance the Rapper has become one of the hardest-working artists in hip-hop. He released the album Surf with his musical collective The Social Experiment, appeared in a dramatic short film, and co-wrote tracks for Kanye’s The Life of Pablo. It seemed like he was doing everything but working on a proper followup to his huge breakthrough. Blessedly, the wait has ended: Chance’s third mixtape Coloring Book has arrived.
The 14 tracks that make up Coloring Book take full advantage of Chance’s newfound central role in hip-hop, boasting a guest list that features the likes of Kanye, Lil Wayne, Future and Young Thug. And his professional career with Justin Bieber is carried out even further with the track “Juke Jam,” a spiritual sequel to their first collaborative song “Confident.” As is typical with the music of Chance, it is infectiously optimistic, arriving just in time to soundtrack the summer.
