Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Opens up About His Battle With Depression

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was the second highest-paid actor last year, raking in a cool $65 million. But even with a boatload of money in his disposable, the Hollywood A-lister revealed that he was secretly battling depression, according to UK-based tabloid publication Express.

Dwayne Johnson expressed, “Struggle and pain is real. I was devastated and depressed,” after witnessing his mother’s attempted suicide. He added, “I reached a point where I didn’t want to do a thing or go anywhere. I was crying constantly.”

Johnson, 45, was just 15-years old when his mother Ata tried to kill herself in front of him, due to the exponential stresses of recently being evicted from their apartment.

“She got out of the car on Interstate 65 in Nashville and walked into oncoming traffic.. I grabbed her and pulled her back on the gravel shoulder of the road,” he said.

He continued, “What’s crazy about that suicide attempt is that to this day, she has no recollection of it whatsoever. Probably best she doesn’t.”

While his mother’s attempted suicide was the main factor in his battle against depression, Johnson also revealed that years later, a break-up with his girlfriend and his failed attempt of becoming a pro-football player was his “absolute worst time.”

Eventually finding success in the wrestling ring before turning to acting in 2000, Johnson said he could have easily become suicidal as well.

“We both healed but we’ve always got to do our best to pay attention when other people are in pain,” he said. “We have to help them through it and remind them they are not alone.”
