Track no. 6 from Sampa The Great’s Birds And The BEE9 album, “Black Girl Magik,” aims to heal audiophiles from experiences of hurt and pain.
The Zambia-born, Sydney-based rapper known around this great blue ball as Sampa The Great has become an award-winning creative force in the music industry—and you’d be right to give her her propers. The charismatic rapper-songwriter has been touring around the globe off the strength of her album, Birds and the BEE9, which recently won the Australian Music Prize. A leader, a star and a bonafide purveyor of positivity, Sampa (real name Sampa Tembo) has shared exclusively with http://uristocrat.com/category/uristocrat/page/612/ her music video for “Black Girl Magik,” which was directed by Sanjay De Silva.
Dripping with finesse and black femininity, “Black Girl Magik” is another high point in the career of Sampa Tembo, who is truly great in presenting this spiritually-minded-and-beautifully-designed visual to our ocular devices. Carrying her identity as a black woman who is powerful, resolute and God divine, Sampa, along with actors Abuk, Ajok Marial, Awak Kongor, Fatuma Olow, Gloria Kolya, Mwanje Tembo and sisters Nyibol and Amani Wol, showcase how clearly-defined black awesomeness can be, while keeping the listener aware of the obstacles and adversities that face them on the daily.
“[‘Black Girl Magik’] was written for my younger sister Mwanje,” Sampa told us via e-mail. “I often wondered what Mwanje saw when she looked back at herself in the mirror. We’re surrounded by beauty standards that we cannot fulfill as they’re not made with us in mind. In this video I wanted to depict something beautiful, strong, and royal — all that she embodies. Mwanje features in the video and continues to be a source of my inspiration and through my artistry, I hope to create a path for her.”
Birds and the BEE9 has received a lot of acclaim and recognition from places such as TIDAL, Rolling Stone AUS, The Guardian, XLR8R, Vibe and other publications of note. As she continues her rise as an artist, storyteller and pushes against all boundaries — Sampa The Great truly is and we are excited to share with you the full, awe-inspiring video for “Black Girl Magik,” which you can see for yourself below.
