PUMA by Hussein Chalayan 2012 Fall/Winter Urban Swift

PUMA by Hussein Chalayan 2012 Fall/Winter Urban Swift

“Inertia,” Hussein Chalayan‘s previous Spring/Summer 2009 collection, provided the reference point for the Urban Swift, his collaborative footwear effort with PUMA. In that collection, Chalayan used moulded latex dresses that looked to be frozen in motion, a commentary on “the speed of our lives and how it can only result in a crash.” The designer, ever engaged in deeper thought and symbolism, used that notion for the PUMA by Hussein Chalayan Urban Swift, which features a sculpted back panel and mimics motion even with its wearer at a complete standstill. In perhaps its last season, the previously-released avant-garde sneaker is now available in bright citron and gray through PUMA Black Label retailers worldwide.

Yasiin Bey x GQ – I Am Yasiin Bey

After coming into the game under the moniker Mos Def, the Brooklyn-born emcee has now taken on the stage name of Yasiin Bey, and in a recent interview with GQ, the artist formally known as Mos shed some light on the change.

I began to fear that Mos Def was being treated as a product, not a person, so I’ve been going by Yasiin since ’99. At first it was just for friends and family, but now I’m declaring it openly.

The man of many talents not only commands ears through rhyme, but also can be seen flexing his acting gift on “Dexter,” as well as on Broadway (in “A Free Man of Color”), and making waves in the fashion industry. GQ caught up with Yasiin Bey to talk about his style, hear how he’s preserving hip-hop through fashion, and more. You can check a few excerpts of the interview down below, as well as a short piece put together titled “I Am Yasiin Bey” up above.

On Paying Homage:

When my paternal grandfather passed a few years back, I started to wear a shirt and tie every day, like he did. Michael Jackson’s death had a big impact on me, too. Right before the Ecstatic tour in 2009, I began wearing loafers and high-waisted pants. And that’s where my look started.

On Honest Goods:

Hip-hop is the last true folk art. I got involved with Ale et Ange because it represents hip-hop in a way that isn’t pandering. It’s nice to see something that’s elegant, skillful, and raw.

G.P.P.R: Fall 2012 (continued)

With some of the Fall pieces first dropping last week (featured here), we were excited to get in another batch of G.P.P.R. goods in to stack our showroom with.

Every t-shirt here is an absolute banger, and I can’t say enough about the classiness and comfort of both colors of the “Lou Speckled Crewneck”. As leaves start to fall and the temperature starts to chill, I’m finding the need for a jacket, exactly like this “Tracy Woven Jacket” to be copped immediately. Luckily it is here…to enjoy in all it’s waxed cotton and buttery brown leather patched glory.

Sacred Skin Documentary Looks at Tattooing Beyond Vanity

Sacred Skin Documentary Looks at Tattooing Beyond Vanity

Although the practice of tattooing appears to many as an exercise in vanity, the art form dates back centuries and often holds added significance for a variety of cultures and peoples. Filmmakers Maellyn Macintosh and Andy Pinkney recently documented their trip around the world as they traveled to the likes of Amsterdam, Africa, India, Indonesia and South America to highlight the last traditional forms of the body modification and to uncover the ideas of healing, protection, identity, pain and spirituality that are embodied by the completed pieces. Previewed here, the “Sacred Skin” series will also feature segments on piercing, pain rituals, scarification and more as Macintosh and Pinkey spotlight the essence of the traditions.
