A Shaded View on Fashion 2009 Film Festival

In a debut initiative, A Shaded View on Fashion present an inaugural 2009 film festival at the end of September. Bringing together various filmmakers, the film festival will feature a number of artistic interpretations of fashion in video form. The short film contest will take place September 27th – 29th with the winner announced at the Pompidou in Paris on October 3rd. As well special screenings from various fashion personalities will also be presented.

Following the evolution of surveillance on a global scale, this concept plays with the satellite idea and a constantly evolving visual tracking technology. High contrast black and white images reveal geometric street patterns in their raw form, with coordinates and location data evoking a sense of military intelligence or voyeurism. The website captures the search, zeroing in on a target from global-to-street level and following it by its coordinates in a series of shifting views.

In addition to the new website, www.y-3.com, the Fall/Winter 2009 SATELLITE campaign will make its debut in September and October issues of Vogue Homme International, i-D, Self Service, V, Vogue Homme Japan, Fantastic Man and 032c, to name a few.

With this Y-3 campaign, adidas continues its exploration of the Future in Sportswear together with Yohji Yamamoto. Moving into uncharted territories has always been where Y-3 finds its greatest success, and this campaign is no different.

The founder of Kicks Hawaii, Ian is a pioneer in the world of sneaker culture with significant contributions including two 2007 collaboration debuts in support of Converse (PRODUCT) RED and his highly sought after 2004 Kicks Hawaii Nike Dunk collaboration. Bringing the spirit of aloha to everything he touches, Ian recently joined Converse, where he now spends his days working on the brand’s most limited product. In a constantly evolving culture, as we find explosive growth in the global vinyl marketplace, one name that has stood the test of time is Hong Kong toy pioneer, Michael Lau. MINDstyle is proud to announce Gardener 10th by Michael Lau – his first ever USA exhibition.

Gardener 10th by Michael Lau is a celebration of his amazing body of work. The event surrounding his 10th anniversary provides an inside look into a unique subculture and an intimate portrait of the man responsible for a collectible figures revolution. Vinyl toys are here to stay, and Michael Lau has masterfully created a blueprint that will be followed for years to come.

His work and collaborations, ranging from Nike to Colette to Maharishi, and now MINDstyle, are a who’s who list of pop culture brands that illustrate where this all started and how it has continued to grow. To best understand the movement, we need look no further than the last decade of Michael’s work and the environment he created for the Gardeners.

Gardener 10th by Michael Lau is a look at the artist and what he does. Through his sketches, drawings, paintings and custom figures, the exhibition captures the essence of the art and toys of one of this generation’s finest toy makers. Art toys are all about the translation and connection each of us has with an artist based on a common set of ideals and experiences expressed visually.

Opening Ceremony Tokyo Store Concept

Scheduled to open on the 30th of August, Opening Ceremony has already released conceptual images as to how the 8-level mega boutique will resemble. To be located in the fashion district of Shibuya, the department store will look nothing like a typical shopping centre. With each floor designed by different creative minds, they will all express a part of the American lifestyle; from the Native American heritage to Southwestern American craftsmanship. Equally important to note is the arresting list of brands who will be hosting their own shop-in-shops: Alexander Wang, Other Music, Nom de Guerre, Boy/Band of Outsiders, Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony, Pendleton, Heath Ceramics and The Row.

Nike Sportswear The IAM1 Journey Taipei

Nike’s innovative TPE 6453 creative space in Taipei recently played host to the latest leg of the IAM1 Journey which has seen itself span various parts of the globe. Incorporating the evolution of the iconic Air Max 1 into the mix as it has eventually developed into the Air Maxim 1, a series of artists from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan each contributed their own interpretation over various mediums. The roster of artists and participants included SILLY THING, ANO, Alien, PhalanX Studio and Lei Lei.

Through a relationship that began in the late 90s and eventually blossomed into a full-fledged friendship, both jeffstaple and Hiroshi Fujiwara have continually pushed the envelope amidst a growing and ultimately extremely saturated product market. Despite the relationship these two influencers posses, their work together has been sparse occupying only a handful of team-ups, that was until the two came together to form the cornerstones of Burton’s advanced diffusion line, iDiom. In a conversation involving both personalities earlier this year in Tokyo, we get a chance to speak candidly between the two and get a better understanding of how their relationship has played out over the years.

ART & COPY Film Trailer

ART & COPY is a powerful new film about advertising and inspiration. Directed by Doug Pray (SURFWISE, SCRATCH, HYPE!), it reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time — people who’ve profoundly impacted our culture, yet are virtually unknown outside their industry. Exploding forth from advertising’s “creative revolution” of the 1960s, these artists and writers all brought a surprisingly rebellious spirit to their work in a business more often associated with mediocrity or manipulation: George Lois, Mary Wells, Dan Wieden, Lee Clow, Hal Riney and others featured in ART & COPY were responsible for “Just Do It,” “I Love NY,” “Where’s the Beef?,” “Got Milk,” “Think Different,” and brilliant campaigns for everything from cars to presidents.
