Manchester United dismissed manager Rúben Amorim on Monday, January 5, ending his 14-month tenure at Old Trafford. The club announced the decision following Sunday's 1-1 draw against Leeds United, which left United in sixth place in the Premier League standings.
A club statement indicated leadership "reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change." Amorim, 40, took over in November 2024 after Erik ten Hag's dismissal. During his time at the club, he won 24 of 63 matches across all competitions, achieving a 32% win rate—the lowest of any Manchester United manager in the Premier League era. He also holds the worst defensive record in club history for that period, conceding 1.53 goals per game. Last season proved particularly difficult, with United finishing 15th in the Premier League—their worst league campaign in 51 years—and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham in May.
Less than 24 hours before his dismissal, Amorim made pointed comments following the Leeds match, stating he was "the manager of this team, not just the coach" and suggesting that arrangement would "finish in 18 months." Former United player Darren Fletcher, currently the Under-18s coach, will serve as interim manager beginning with Wednesday's match against Burnley. The club has not announced plans for a permanent replacement.
