The Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott on Monday and promoted general manager Brandon Beane to president of football operations.
McDermott departs Buffalo with a 98-50 regular season record and an 8-8 postseason mark across nine seasons. He led the team to five AFC East division titles and eight playoff appearances since his hiring in 2017. The decision followed Saturday's 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC divisional round. It marked the fourth time in five seasons the Bills exited the playoffs in the divisional round.
Owner Terry Pegula stated the organization needed a new leadership structure to advance. Beane, who joined the Bills months after McDermott in 2017, will retain his general manager duties while assuming increased responsibilities. He will oversee all football operations and lead the search for a new head coach. The Bills won 91 games from 2019 through 2025, the most over a seven-season span for any team without a Super Bowl appearance.
McDermott reached two AFC championship games, both losses to the Kansas City Chiefs. The coaching change means quarterback Josh Allen will work with a new head coach for the first time in his nine-year NFL career. The Bills will debut their new stadium next season. McDermott, 51, has indicated he plans to continue coaching. Seven NFL teams currently have head coaching vacancies.
