Channel Tres released "Pop Pop" on Friday, May 22, the second single from his forthcoming sophomore album Enigma. He co-wrote and co-produced the track with his regular collaborator Nick Sylvester. It follows "Medicine," released earlier this spring, as the second preview ahead of his upcoming North American headlining tour.
What it sounds like
"Pop Pop" is a house track in the loosest, swaggiest sense of the word. The bass is a one-finger pattern that takes up half the song. The kick is unhurried. Channel Tres's vocal sits at the front of the mix in that almost-spoken Compton register he has built a career on, and the only thing that resembles a hook is the title repeated like a quiet flex. It is the most Channel-Tres-sounding Channel Tres track he has released in two years — house music with a hip-hop walk.
The track is a useful pre-album marker for what Enigma seems to be. His 2023 debut Real Cultural Shit reached harder for the dance floor; this run feels like a return to the lower-BPM, smoke-and-strobe energy of the early EPs that introduced him in 2018-2019. If Enigma commits to that pocket across a full LP, it will be the strongest piece of his catalog.
