Cristian Mungiu's 'Fjord' Wins Palme d'Or at 2026 Cannes Film Festival

Cristian Mungiu won the Palme d'Or at the 79th Cannes Film Festival on Saturday for Fjord, a moral drama about a Romanian Evangelical family caught in Norway's child-welfare system. The win is Mungiu's second — his first was 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days in 2007 — and makes him the tenth director to take the festival's top prize twice.

The film

Fjord stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. The Romanian Evangelical family at its center is targeted by Norwegian child protective services, and the film tracks how a process that looks neutral on paper plays out very differently when cultural and religious vocabulary fails to translate across borders. It is recognizably Mungiu territory: long takes, institutional pressure, the moral cost of doing nothing.

Neon, seven in a row

North American distributor Neon now has seven consecutive Palme winners on its release slate — a streak that began with Parasite in 2019 and is the longest run by a single distributor in the festival's history. Tom Quinn's acquisitions team has become the story underneath every Cannes prize prediction; the bet that the most challenging film in competition is also the most commercially durable one has paid out almost without exception. Earlier this week Neon also handled Peter Jackson's honorary Palme reception, tying its prestige presence to the festival's opening as well as its close.

The rest of the slate

Grand Prix went to Andrey Zvyagintsev's Minotaur. Best Director split between Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi for The Black Ball and Paweł Pawlikowski for Fatherland. Best Actress went jointly to Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto for All of a Sudden. Best Actor was shared by Valentin Campagne and Emmanuel Macchia for Coward. Park Chan-wook chaired the jury.

What's next

Mungiu joins a short list of two-time Palme winners. Fjord will get the standard Neon awards-season run-up; if the previous six Palmes are any guide, that's a path to a fall theatrical run, a December push, and a real Best Picture conversation by January.
