Foot Locker and Nike are opening The Crenshaw Rec by Foot Locker at 3222 W Slauson Ave. in South Los Angeles on Saturday, August 22, a store built with neighborhood leaders and The Marathon Brand, the label Nipsey Hussle founded with his brother Samiel Asghedom. The companies announced the store on August 17. Neither disclosed the investment figure.

What is in the store

The format borrows from a recreation center rather than a mall footprint. Alongside retail, the space carries an equipment room, an open gym, creative workspaces and a resource center, plus programming that runs year-round: educational workshops, music academies, run clubs and barber services. Nike, Jordan Brand and Converse product sits next to the neighborhood-specific collections.

Two of those collections are specific to the neighborhood. There is a Crenshaw High School x Nike Team Shop collection, and a designer capsule from Gavin Mathieu of Supervsn Studios. The store also runs The Crenshaw Striper Program, a neighborhood hiring initiative.

Opening day starts at 10 a.m. on August 22 with a community swap meet and a 3v3 tournament outside the shop.

The address

The Slauson and Crenshaw shopping center is where Nipsey Hussle sold mixtapes out of the parking lot before opening The Marathon Clothing there. He was killed outside that store in 2019. His brother and Marathon co-founder Samiel Asghedom tied the partnership to that history in the announcement, saying "the family is honored for The Marathon Brand to have the opportunity to partner with NIKE, Inc. for the launch of The Crenshaw Rec by Foot Locker" and that "this location is extremely important because we were raised in this shopping center."

Brett O'Brien, Foot Locker's SVP and chief marketing officer, said the store "reflects our commitment to investing in communities that have shaped our brand."

Foot Locker under new ownership

Foot Locker now operates as part of Dick's Sporting Goods, which acquired it in 2025. In the first full quarter under that ownership, Foot Locker returned to positive comparable sales — up 6.4% at the US banner — after Dick's closed 85 owned stores, 62 of them flagged as unproductive.

Nike opened 216 Lafayette in SoHo with a similar programming-led format.
