Jordan Brand is handing one of its most overlooked silhouettes to a Ghanaian streetwear collective, and giving it a wide release. The Free The Youth x Air Jordan 16 arrives July 17 for $255 in a Metallic Silver, Picante Red and Total Orange makeup, style code IV7638-001 — the Accra-based label's first signature collaboration with the Jumpman.
The Air Jordan 16, Rarely Retroed
The Air Jordan 16 is not a silhouette Jordan Brand revisits often. Designed by Wilson Smith III for the 2000–01 season — Michael Jordan's first as a Washington Wizards executive, before his own comeback — the shoe shipped with a removable shroud, a patent-leather heel and a dress-shoe sensibility that split opinion. It has spent most of the last two decades in the vault, which makes a full collaborative release on the model unusual in itself.
Free The Youth uses that shroud as its canvas. The exterior reads Metallic Silver; flip it and the interior reveals large bird wings in orange and blue — a nod to the Tawny Eagle, Ghana's national bird, and a symbol the collective ties to strength and leadership. An orange-to-black gradient carries the "FTY" logo along the base, with neon green accents at the heel and a "Free The Youth" hit on the lateral side. The pair ships in a Jordan face box with cargo-ship-themed tissue paper, a reference to the collective's diaspora framing.
Jordan Brand's Africa Play
That Jordan Brand gave a vaulted, largely forgotten model to an African label — and cleared it for a general release rather than the Europe-only, thousand-pair treatment such projects once got — signals how seriously the Jumpman now treats Africa as a market rather than a marketing backdrop. It is the next step in a partnership that has been building deliberately: President John Mahama was gifted a numbered Free The Youth Air Jordan 1 in January, and the two sides have a collaborative Air Jordan 3 lined up for Holiday 2026. The AJ16 is the first of those projects to reach a signature co-sign.
Release Details
Founded by Jonathan Coffie, Kelly Foli, Winfred Mensah and Richard Kweku Ormano, Free The Youth started as a youth-empowerment movement before growing into one of West Africa's most visible streetwear names. The Air Jordan 16 releases July 17 at Free The Youth, Nike SNKRS and select Jordan Brand retailers for $255, in full-family sizing. It joins a widening list of outside partners Jordan Brand has trusted with its archive over the past year.
