Saturday's slate is short on basketball and long on playoff stakes everywhere else. There is one NBA game on the board and it happens to be the most important one in the conference finals so far. Two NHL teams and three WNBA teams play on national TV, and MLB stuffs sixteen games into the day. If you only pick one screen tonight, it is an easy call.
Marquee: Knicks at Cavaliers, East Finals Game 3 (8:00pm ET, ABC)
Cleveland is down 0-2 after dropping both games in New York. ESPN's framing is that Donovan Mitchell has been in this hole before and clawed out of it, which is true. The harder problem is that the Knicks have not stolen anything in this series. They have controlled stretches of both games and they are 35-17 against the East this year for a reason. Cavs are 27-14 at home and the crowd is worth something. If Mitchell does not get real help from Garland and Mobley early, the math gets ugly: no team has come back from 0-3 in NBA history, and Game 4 is in the same building Monday. Knicks have nothing to lose tonight, which is exactly the kind of road dog that covers.
Vegas line: Cavaliers -2.5, total 214.5, CLE -130 / NYK +110 (DraftKings).
Also tonight
- Canadiens at Hurricanes (7:00pm ET, TNT). The other Game 3 of the night. Montreal stole Game 1 in Carolina and the Hurricanes are now in the same bracket as the Cavs: home team that has to win or the series tilts. Habs are the younger team. Carolina is the deeper one. Tonight tells you which one matters more in May.
- Lynx at Sky (1:00pm ET, CBS). Earliest tip of the day and the only national WNBA game before primetime. Minnesota is a contender, Chicago is in another rebuild year. If you want to see what the Lynx look like with a full preseason of continuity, this is the window.
- Astros at Cubs (2:20pm ET, ESPN Unlimited). Saturday at Wrigley. Houston in interleague at Chicago is the kind of game that does not move the needle until you flip it on and remember Wrigley in May is still one of the best things in the sport.
- Dodgers at Brewers (7:15pm ET, MLB.TV). Best primetime MLB game on the slate. Milwaukee plays the Dodgers tough in this park every year and the NL Central race is closer than the NL West already.
- Sparks at Aces (8:00pm ET, CBS). WNBA on national TV in primetime. Vegas is the league's measuring stick. The Sparks are the league's biggest market. If you only watch one W game this week, this is probably it.
Two playoff series get Game 3s tonight, and both home teams need them. Knicks at Cavs is the one to clear the calendar for. If you can second-screen the Habs game on TNT and check in on the Dodgers around 7:15, you will see everything that matters in May sports in one night.
