The World Cup takes over Monday. The Round of 32 opens with three knockout matches, win or go home, spread across Houston, Foxborough, and Monterrey. Underneath that, baseball runs a full 13-game board, and the night's best domestic watch is two contenders meeting at Wrigley Field as the Padres visit the Cubs.
World Cup today
- Brazil vs Japan (1pm ET, FOX). The knockout round opens with the tournament's most decorated nation. Brazil, a five-time champion, meets a Japan side that has made a habit of bloodying favorites at recent World Cups. NRG Stadium in Houston hosts.
- Germany vs Paraguay (4:30pm ET, FOX). Four-time champion Germany draws South American grit in Paraguay at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. A loss ends either tournament on the spot.
- Netherlands vs Morocco (9pm ET, FOX). The nightcap heads to Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, where the Netherlands faces a Morocco team that reached the semifinals in 2022 and arrives as nobody's easy out.
Marquee: San Diego Padres at Chicago Cubs (8:05pm ET, primetime at Wrigley)
This is the best baseball matchup on the board. The Cubs (46-38) sit comfortably over .500 and host a Padres club (43-39) that is right in the thick of the National League race. Chicago hands the ball to Shota Imanaga (5-6, 4.40), who has allowed one earned run or fewer in two of his last three starts. A night game at Wrigley between two teams that both expect to play October baseball is exactly the kind of game that decides wild card seeding in September.

Also tonight
- Los Angeles Dodgers at Athletics (9:40pm ET). The Dodgers own the best record in baseball at 54-30 and roll into Sacramento against an Athletics team 14 games under. On paper it is a mismatch, but the Dodgers lineup is appointment viewing regardless of the opponent.
- Cincinnati Reds at Milwaukee Brewers (7:40pm ET). Milwaukee is the story of the NL Central at 50-31, the hottest team in the division. The Reds (39-43) need a series like this to climb back into the race. A divisional night with real standings weight.
- Detroit Tigers at New York Yankees (7:05pm ET). The Yankees (48-35) hold the top of the AL East and welcome a Detroit team that has slipped to 35-49. New York is trying to bank wins before the All-Star break.
- Pittsburgh Pirates at Philadelphia Phillies (6:40pm ET). Philadelphia (47-37) is one of the NL's heavyweights and opens a series against a Pirates club playing for pride at 42-42. The Phillies' lineup against a young Pittsburgh staff is the matchup to track.
- New York Mets at Toronto Blue Jays (7:07pm ET). Two clubs sitting at 35-49 and 39-45 looking to steady themselves. An interleague-flavored night at Rogers Centre between two markets that expected more by now.
