It is a World Cup day. The Round of 16 lands in Atlanta and Vancouver this afternoon, with Lionel Messi and the reigning champions on before the domestic board even warms up. Argentina have won all four of their matches so far. By the time the last out drops tonight, a full slate of baseball and two WNBA games will have run behind it.
World Cup today
Two Round of 16 matches, and the winners meet each other in the same quarterfinal in Kansas City on Saturday, July 11.
- Argentina vs Egypt (12:00 PM ET, FOX). The reigning champions are unbeaten through four, coming off a 3-2 win over Cape Verde in extra time in the Round of 32. Egypt got here the hard way, past Australia on penalties. Messi is tied for the tournament's goal lead, and a quarterfinal spot is on the table. Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta.
- Switzerland vs Colombia (4:00 PM ET, FOX). Switzerland have reached the Round of 16 in each of the last three World Cups but have not gone further since 1954. Colombia are back in the knockouts after missing the 2022 tournament entirely. BC Place, Vancouver.
Marquee: Yankees at Rays, first place in the AL East on the line (6:40 PM ET, TBS)
The Rays (52-36) lead the division and the Yankees (50-40) sit four back, so this three-game set in St. Petersburg carries real standings weight. Tampa Bay hands the ball to lefty Ian Seymour (5-1, 4.02 ERA), New York counters with Will Warren (7-3, 3.73). The Rays have been the better team all year and get the nod at home, but the Yankees have the lineup to flip a division race in a hurry. This is the game to watch tonight.

- Brewers at Cardinals (2:15 PM ET, doubleheader Game 1). Milwaukee owns the best record in baseball at 56-33 and makes up a May rainout with a two-for-one in St. Louis. The Cardinals (47-41) are still hanging around the NL Central race.
- Braves at Pirates (6:40 PM ET). Atlanta (52-37) has one of the best records in the National League. Pittsburgh (46-45) is trying to stay in the Wild Card picture at PNC Park.
- Phillies at Reds (7:10 PM ET). Philadelphia (50-41) leads the NL East. Cincinnati (41-48) has slipped, but that ballpark keeps every game live into the ninth.
- Rockies at Dodgers (10:10 PM ET). Los Angeles (60-32) has the best record in the National League. Colorado (37-55) is the get-right opponent, and the Dodgers rarely waste those at home.
- Dallas Wings at New York Liberty (8:00 PM ET, ESPN). Both teams sit at 13-8, dead even in the standings, on national TV at Barclays Center. The best women's basketball game on the slate.
- Sky at Mercury (10:00 PM ET). Chicago (6-14) visits Phoenix (8-13). Two sub-.500 teams, each trying to climb its conference standings.
