The World Cup takes a breather Wednesday, one last rest day before the quarterfinals open Thursday, so the night belongs to baseball and the WNBA. Fifteen MLB games, a three-game WNBA slate, and a real AL East pennant race headline the board. Here is what is worth your time.
Marquee: Yankees at the first-place Rays (6:40 PM ET, Prime Video)
Tampa Bay (53-36) has quietly built the best record in the AL East and holds a comfortable lead over New York (50-41). This is the kind of game that decides whether the Yankees close the gap or spend the rest of July looking up. The pitching matchup is the draw: Shane McClanahan (7-5, 3.05) for the Rays against Gerrit Cole (3-3, 4.01) for the Yankees, two arms who can carry a low-scoring night. Cole was sharp his last time out against the Twins, and the Rays have been tough at home all season. Expect a tight one.
Vegas line: Rays -120, over/under 7 runs (ESPN).
Also tonight
- Brewers at Cardinals (7:45 PM ET). Milwaukee (58-33) owns the best record in baseball and heads into St. Louis (47-43) with a firm grip on the NL Central. The Cardinals need to start stacking wins if they want to make the division interesting.
- Cubs at Orioles (6:35 PM ET). Chicago (51-40) is chasing Milwaukee in the Central and draws a Baltimore team (42-50) that has underachieved all year. A get-right spot for the Cubs, on paper.
- Phillies at Reds (7:00 PM ET, ESPN). Philadelphia (51-41) stays in the NL East hunt against a Cincinnati (41-49) club that keeps hovering under .500. National TV gives this one a bigger stage than the standings suggest.
- Lynx at Sun (7:30 PM ET). Minnesota (15-6) is one of the WNBA's best and visits a Connecticut (5-16) team having a rough year. The Lynx should control this one, but the Sun have played spoiler before.
- Valkyries at Tempo (7:00 PM ET). Golden State (15-7) has been the surprise of the WNBA season and heads to Toronto to face the expansion Tempo (9-11). Two young franchises, both further along than anyone expected.
- Fever at Sparks (10:00 PM ET, USA / CNBC). Indiana (12-8) and Caitlin Clark close the night in Los Angeles against the Sparks (8-11). Late tip on the West Coast, national TV, and the biggest draw in the league. Worth staying up for.
The thread tonight is separation. The Rays and Brewers are trying to turn strong first halves into division control, the Yankees and Cubs are trying not to let them, and the WNBA's contenders keep pulling away from the pack. Pick a game, grab a tile, and settle in.
