Five MLB games run from lunchtime into the evening on Thursday. The headliner comes first: Chris Sale on the mound at Truist Park with a chance to close out the Padres. After that the schedule spreads out, with contenders in Cleveland and St. Louis and a Rays club sitting on one of the best records in baseball.
Marquee: Padres at Braves, series finale (12:15 PM ET, MLB.TV)
Atlanta leads this set 2-1 after a 7-6 win on Wednesday, and it hands the ball to its ace to finish the job. Chris Sale is 10-6 with a 2.06 ERA and has never lost to San Diego, going 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA across six career starts against them. His last time out he threw seven scoreless innings against Texas and picked up his 2,700th career strikeout. The Padres counter with lefty Kyle Hart (0-2, 5.66), a steep mismatch on paper. San Diego needs its bats to show up early, because Sale rarely gives a lineup room to climb back.

- Twins at Guardians (1:10 PM ET). Cleveland (54-49) keeps pace in the AL Central behind Gavin Williams (10-5, 4.00). Minnesota answers with Taj Bradley (9-4, 3.85), so this one has two pitchers having real seasons. The Twins sit at 50-53 and need wins to stay in the wild-card mix.
- Rays at Blue Jays (3:07 PM ET). Tampa Bay is 59-42, tied for one of the best records in the league, and rolls out Ian Seymour (6-2, 4.79). Toronto (46-56) counters with former Cy Young winner Shane Bieber (1-1, 5.70), still working back toward form. The Rays are the story here.
- Diamondbacks at Cardinals (5:15 PM ET). Two clubs hovering near .500 with real postseason hope. Arizona (53-49) throws Brandon Pfaadt. St. Louis (52-49) answers with Michael McGreevy. A near coin flip between teams that need to separate from the pack.
- Royals at Tigers (6:40 PM ET). Detroit (48-54) hosts Kansas City (43-60) in the nightcap. Troy Melton starts for the Tigers, Randy Dobnak for the Royals. Lower stakes, but the Tigers would like to climb back toward .500.
