Fourteen baseball games, three NFL preseason games, and two WNBA games. The night belongs to Los Angeles, where the two best records in the National League start a four-game set, but the afternoon and early evening give you plenty before that. Cardinals and Cubs get going at 2:20 p.m. ET at Wrigley, and the football season starts making noise at 7.
Marquee: Brewers at Dodgers, best record in the NL on the line (10:10 p.m. ET, ESPN)
Milwaukee comes in at 75-47, the best record in baseball, and Los Angeles is right behind at 73-49. The Brewers have not been good out west this year, and they draw the wrong starter to fix that. Yoshinobu Yamamoto is 11-7 with a 2.65 ERA and has been better than that since the break, with a 1.88 ERA over his last 28.2 innings. He already handled this lineup in May, one run over seven. Milwaukee counters with lefty Robert Gasser, 3-4 with a 4.57 ERA, though the Brewers have won each of his last four starts and he has 18 strikeouts to four walks in that stretch. Milwaukee has spent the season winning games its pitching staff had no business winning. This is the test of whether that holds up in October conditions.

- Cardinals at Cubs (2:20 p.m. ET, Apple TV). The earliest game on the board and the one most likely to be on in your office. Chicago is 71-51 and chasing Milwaukee in the Central, so every game against a .500-ish division rival counts double right now. St. Louis is 61-60 and playing out a middling season.
- Buccaneers at Jets (7:00 p.m. ET, NFL Network). Preseason football at MetLife. Starters play a series if they play at all. Watch it for the roster fights, not the score.
- Orioles at Rays (7:10 p.m. ET). Tampa Bay is 74-46 and quietly running the American League. Baltimore is 58-63 and has been the season's biggest disappointment. The Rays are the story here.
- Diamondbacks at Braves (7:15 p.m. ET). Atlanta sits at 73-48, third-best record in the sport. Arizona is 64-58 and still in the wild card conversation, which makes this the most consequential East Coast game of the night.
- Yankees at Blue Jays (7:15 p.m. ET, Apple TV). New York is 68-53 and has separated from Toronto, which has fallen to 59-64. Division games in August still carry weight, and the Rogers Centre crowd will treat this like it matters.
- Wings at Fever (7:30 p.m. ET, ION). Indiana is 21-12, Dallas is 20-14, and both are fighting for playoff seeding with a few weeks left. The best WNBA game on the schedule tonight by a wide margin.
The through line is the standings. Milwaukee, Los Angeles, Tampa Bay, and Atlanta are all playing tonight, and all four are building toward a postseason where the margins are thin. The Dodger Stadium game is the one that tells you the most, but the early window is where you can actually watch without staying up.
