Thursday belongs to the WNBA. Indiana is on a five-game winning streak in the middle of a road trip, Dallas is starting a homestand it badly needs, and the two of them played a 29-point-apiece duel a week ago. Baseball gives you Gerrit Cole at Camden Yards. The NFL gives you a second week of preseason football that matters mostly to the guys fighting for the back half of the roster.

Marquee: Indiana Fever at Dallas Wings, playoff spot on the line (8:00 PM ET, Prime Video)

The Fever are 24-12 and can clinch a playoff berth tonight. They have won 10 of 12 and are riding a five-game streak, including a 98-87 win over these same Wings on Friday where Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers each put up 29. Dallas is 20-16 and going the other direction, losers of two straight and seven of nine, and the roster keeps thinning. Rookie Azzi Fudd is out for the season with a knee injury, per ESPN, and Aziaha James is out with a leg issue. Clark is probable with a back issue, Aliyah Boston is probable with a knee, and Kelsey Mitchell, who dropped 29 on Toronto Tuesday, has been listed probable with an illness. The number tells the story: this opened at Indiana -1.5 and has been bet up to -3.5.

Vegas line: Fever -3.5 (-108), total 184.5, moneyline Fever -162 / Wings +136, per ESPN's WNBA odds page.

Also tonight

  • New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles (6:35 PM ET, YES / MASN). Gerrit Cole against Kyle Bradish is the best pitching matchup on the board tonight. New York is 71-55 and still has work to do in the AL East. Baltimore is 61-66 and playing for next year, which does not stop Camden Yards from being a bad place to make a mistake with a fastball.
  • Las Vegas Raiders at Houston Texans (8:00 PM ET, ESPN). Preseason Week 2, both teams 0-1. Watch the first 20 minutes for the starters, then it turns into a roster-cut evaluation game. That is the honest pitch.
  • Connecticut Sun at Las Vegas Aces (10:00 PM ET, WNBA League Pass). Las Vegas is 24-13 and sitting a half game behind Indiana in the standings. Connecticut is 9-25 and long since out of it. The seeding math is the reason to watch the Vegas half of this one.
  • Atlanta Dream at Los Angeles Sparks (10:00 PM ET, Prime Video). Atlanta is 22-13 and firmly in the playoff field. Los Angeles is 12-23 and just watched Nneka Ogwumike announce her retirement. Late window, real stakes for one side.
  • San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Chargers (10:00 PM ET, NFL Network). The nightcap. Los Angeles is the only team on tonight's football slate with a preseason win. Backup quarterback reps and special teams, which is exactly what August is for.

The thread tonight is the WNBA's last eight games. Indiana can lock in a playoff spot, Las Vegas is chasing it from a half game back, and Dallas is trying to hold on to relevance with two rotation players already done for the year. Baseball and preseason football are the background. The 8pm game is the one you sit down for.
