Thursday is a heavyweight baseball night wearing a quiet uniform. The two best records in the National League meet in Atlanta with a first-round bye hanging on it, two of the league's best ERAs on the mound, and a season series that has been lopsided in one direction. Around it: the Astros trying to hang on in the AL Wild Card race at Yankee Stadium, the WNBA's hottest team in Brooklyn, and the last weekend of NFL preseason football before rosters get cut to 53.
Marquee: Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta Braves, NL seeding on the line (7:15 PM ET, FS1)
Los Angeles is 80-53 and leads the NL West. Atlanta is 78-55 and leads the NL East. Two games separate them, and the prize is a first-round bye, which goes to the top two teams in each league. Atlanta has owned this matchup, taking the season series 4-1 and going for the sweep tonight, and the Braves are 44-23 at home. The pitching matchup is the reason to clear your evening: Chris Sale (12-9, 2.20 ERA) against Yoshinobu Yamamoto (12-7, 2.61 ERA), second and third in the National League in ERA. Per MLB.com, this series could decide which of them plays in October's first weekend and which one rests.

Also tonight
- Houston Astros at New York Yankees (7:05 PM ET, YES). Houston is 66-67 and fading. New York is 75-57 and the second-shortest World Series price on the board at +750. The Astros need this kind of series to stay in the AL picture, and they get it in the toughest building to steal one.
- Golden State Valkyries at New York Liberty (8:00 PM ET, Prime Video). The Valkyries are 27-11, the best record in this game by four games, in year two of the franchise. The Liberty are 23-15 and defending their title. This is the best WNBA game on the schedule tonight and it is nationally televised.
- Milwaukee Brewers at New York Mets (7:10 PM ET, SNY). Milwaukee owns baseball's best record at 82-51 and hands the ball to Jacob Misiorowski, who is 13-5 with a 1.68 ERA. The Mets are 60-73 and playing out the string. Watch it for the arm, not the standings.
- Pittsburgh Steelers at Buffalo Bills (7:00 PM ET, NFL Network). Preseason, so the starters will be brief or absent. The value here is the roster bubble: these are the last live reps before teams cut to 53.
- San Francisco 49ers at Las Vegas Raiders (8:00 PM ET, ESPN). Same logic, better backdrop. Allegiant Stadium in August is a good place to find out which backup quarterback keeps a job.
- Washington Mystics at Phoenix Mercury (10:00 PM ET, Prime Video). The late window. Washington is 23-15 and tied with the Liberty. Phoenix is 13-25 and eliminated from the conversation. The Mystics are the reason to stay up.
