September starts with baseball and nothing else. Fifteen MLB games, no NFL yet, no WNBA on the board. The one that matters most is at Wrigley, where the Cubs are trying to make a seven-game deficit in the NL Central feel smaller than it is. They took the opener. They need the rest.
Marquee: Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs, NL Central (7:40 PM ET, TBS)
Milwaukee is 85-53 and has been the best team in the National League all year. Chicago is 78-60 and sitting seven back, which means this four-game set is close to the Cubs' last honest shot at the division. They won Monday to open it, so the math is briefly interesting again. Milwaukee still leads the season series 4-3. On the mound it is Robert Gasser for the Brewers against Matthew Boyd for the Cubs, and the total sitting at 10 says the market expects the offenses to show up. National window on TBS, which is the right stage for it.
Vegas line: Cubs -124, Brewers +116, total 10 (DraftKings via ESPN).
Also tonight
- New York Mets at Tampa Bay Rays (6:40 PM ET, SNY). The Rays are 82-55, the best record in the American League, and they have spent the whole season getting less attention than that deserves. The Mets are 62-76 and playing out the string. Watch it for Tampa Bay, not for the matchup.
- Seattle Mariners at Boston Red Sox (6:45 PM ET, NESN). Boston is 75-63 and holding a wild card spot with a month to go. Seattle is 64-74 and out of it. Every one of these games is a Red Sox game they are supposed to win, which is exactly the kind that decides October seeding.
- Toronto Blue Jays at Cleveland Guardians (6:40 PM ET, Sportsnet). Toronto 68-70, Cleveland 69-68. Two teams on the edge of the AL race that need to start stacking wins immediately. Low profile, real stakes.
- Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals (6:45 PM ET, BravesVision). Atlanta is 82-56 and rolling. Washington is 66-74. The Braves have quietly built one of the best records in baseball and are worth checking in on before the postseason bracket surprises you.
- Philadelphia Phillies at Arizona Diamondbacks (9:40 PM ET, NBC Sports Philadelphia). Philadelphia at 78-60 against Arizona at 73-66. Both are in the wild card conversation, which makes this the most consequential late game on the slate outside of Los Angeles.
- St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers (10:10 PM ET, ESPN). The Dodgers are 82-55 and tied with Tampa Bay for the best record in baseball. St. Louis is 68-70. It is the national late window, so if you are staying up, this is the one.
The thread tonight is the gap between teams that already know what they are and teams still auditioning. Milwaukee, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles, and Atlanta have their seats.
