Fifteen MLB games today and no other league in session, so the whole day belongs to baseball. It starts early with San Diego at Cincinnati at 12:40 ET and runs until Cardinals at Dodgers at 10:10 ET. The one that matters most sits at Wrigley Field, where the two best teams in the National League Central keep taking swings at each other.
Marquee: Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs (7:40 ET, MLB Network)
Milwaukee is 86-53, the best record in baseball, and holds an eight-game cushion on Chicago at 78-61. The Brewers took the opener 9-4 on Tuesday, which stung more for the Cubs because Chicago had just closed out a record home run month, nine of them in a single game to finish August, per ESPN. Today is the pitching mismatch on paper. Milwaukee sends Jacob Misiorowski, 14-5 with a 1.73 ERA, against Chicago lefty David Peterson at 7-7 and 5.11. The Cubs are not chasing the division at this point so much as protecting a wild card seed, and the honest version of this game is that Chicago needs its bats to outrun the arm difference.

- Philadelphia Phillies at Arizona Diamondbacks (3:40 ET, ESPN). The national afternoon window. Philadelphia is 79-60 and running the NL East. Arizona at 73-67 is close enough to the wild card cut that a series like this decides whether they buy into October or start planning for next year.
- New York Mets at Tampa Bay Rays (6:40 ET). Tampa Bay is 83-55 and quietly one of the best teams in the league. The Mets at 62-77 have been out of it for weeks. This is a spoiler game where the spoiler has very little left to spoil with.
- Seattle Mariners at Boston Red Sox (4:10 ET). Fenway in early September with Boston at 75-64 and still in the wild card hunt. Seattle is 65-74 and playing out the string, which makes this a game Boston has to take rather than one it gets to enjoy.
- New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels (9:38 ET). The Yankees are 79-60 and tied with Philadelphia for the best record in the East. The Angels are 53-86 and just changed hands. Late window, lopsided matchup, worth it if you want Aaron Judge at-bats after midnight on the East Coast.
- St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers (10:10 ET). The Dodgers at 82-56 lost 13-8 to St. Louis on Tuesday, which is the kind of result that keeps showing up for Los Angeles this year. The Cardinals are 69-70 and have nothing to lose, which is exactly when they are most annoying.
- Toronto Blue Jays at Cleveland Guardians (6:40 ET). Two teams within a game of .500 with fading paths to the postseason. Cleveland is 70-68 and Toronto is 68-71. Whoever loses this series is effectively done.
The thread today is separation. Milwaukee, Tampa Bay, and the two 79-60 teams in the East are trying to lock down seeding, and everyone between 68 and 75 wins is running out of games to prove they belong in that group. September baseball sorts itself fast, and by the end of this week most of these teams will know which conversation they are in.
