Sixteen games on the board and no football yet, so the pennant races have the day to themselves. The one that matters most opens in Philadelphia, where Atlanta brings a four-game NL East lead into a four-game series against a Phillies team that has been chasing them since June. Two aces on the mound, first pitch at 6:40 ET on ESPN. Everything else on the slate is playing for seeding behind it.
Marquee: Braves at Phillies, NL East on the line (6:40 PM ET, ESPN)
Atlanta is 83-57 and four games up on Philadelphia at 79-61. This is the first of four in a row between them, which means the division can swing all the way back or get put away by Sunday night. The pitching matchup is the best you will see today: Chris Sale, 13-9 with a 2.06 ERA over 144 innings for the Braves, against Cristopher Sanchez, 16-4 with a 2.52 ERA and 202 strikeouts for the Phillies. Sale has the better rate numbers, Sanchez has the better team behind him at home. The total tells you what the market expects, and it is low. Odds via ESPN, line from DraftKings.

- Tigers at Guardians (2:10 PM ET). First pitch of the day, and the front half of a doubleheader in Cleveland. Detroit is 64-75 and out of it. Cleveland at 70-70 is still technically alive, which is why the nightcap at 7:10 ET matters more to them than the opener.
- Brewers at Reds (6:10 PM ET). Milwaukee is 87-54, the best record in baseball, and has spent the summer quietly running away with the NL Central. Cincinnati at 67-73 is playing out the string. Watch this one for the Brewers rotation, not the drama.
- Cubs at Marlins (7:10 PM ET). Chicago is 79-62 and needs every game to hold a wild card spot. Miami at 71-70 is the most annoying kind of opponent in September, good enough to beat you and with nothing to lose.
- Red Sox at Orioles (7:05 PM ET). Boston at 76-65 is in the AL wild card mix. Baltimore at 69-72 is not, but Camden Yards has been a problem for Boston all year.
- Yankees at Padres (9:40 PM ET). The best late window on the slate. New York is 80-60, San Diego is 73-67 and fighting for an NL wild card. Interleague games in September rarely mean much. This one does for the Padres.
- Nationals at Dodgers (10:10 PM ET). Los Angeles is 83-57 and tied with Atlanta for the second-best record in the National League. Washington at 67-75 is the kind of team the Dodgers are supposed to beat, and the standings say they need to.
The thread today is that four teams are separated by almost nothing at the top of the National League. Milwaukee has the best record, Atlanta and Los Angeles are tied behind them, and Philadelphia is close enough that one series flips the whole picture.
