Sunday is all baseball. Thirteen games still to play, most of them stacked into the 1:35 to 2:10 ET window, and the one that matters most starts late afternoon in San Diego. The Yankees and Padres split the first two, both teams are chasing October from different directions, and the finale decides who leaves feeling good about it.
Marquee: New York Yankees at San Diego Padres, rubber match at Petco Park (4:10 p.m. ET, YES / Padres.TV)
The Yankees come in at 81-61 and took Saturday 5-1, with Spencer Jones starting the rally that broke it open against the team he grew up watching (ESPN recap). San Diego is 74-68 and cannot afford to give away home games this late. The series is tied 1-1, so this is the rubber match, and the market treats it that way. Neither side is favored. That is unusual for a Yankees road game and it says something about where Petco plays in September.

- Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles (1:35 p.m. ET). Boston is 78-65 and every game against a sub-.500 division rival is one it is supposed to bank. Baltimore at 69-74 is playing for next year and for the chance to ruin somebody's month.
- Chicago Cubs at Miami Marlins (1:40 p.m. ET). The Cubs are 81-62 and have quietly put together one of the best records in the National League. Miami is 71-72 and has been a harder out at home than the record suggests.
- Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Guardians (1:40 p.m. ET). Cleveland is 72-71 and still has a path. Detroit at 65-77 does not, which makes this the kind of division game where the standings and the intensity point in opposite directions.
- Tampa Bay Rays at Texas Rangers (2:35 p.m. ET). Tampa Bay is 85-57, the best record on today's card. Texas is 70-73 and out of margin. If you want to watch the American League's most complete team, this is the window.
- Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox (6:20 p.m. ET, NBC / Peacock). The national night game, and a strange one: the White Sox are 74-68 and above Minnesota at 68-74. Chicago has flipped the script on this rivalry.
- Washington Nationals at Los Angeles Dodgers (10:10 p.m. ET). The nightcap. Los Angeles is 85-57 and tied with Tampa Bay for the best mark of the day. Washington is 67-77 and gets the late West Coast assignment.
The thread today is separation. Milwaukee, Tampa Bay, and Los Angeles are already gone. The interesting baseball is in the middle, where Cleveland, Houston, Chicago, and San Diego are all still within reach of something and all still capable of playing themselves out of it. Start with the Yankees and Padres, then pick a middle-of-the-pack team and watch how it handles a September Sunday.
