Friday night is all baseball and a little basketball. Fifteen MLB games, three WNBA games, and the best of it sits in St. Petersburg, where two AL East teams bound for October meet with a little over a week left.
Marquee: Red Sox at Rays, AL East rivals with October in view (7:10 p.m. ET, ESPN)
Tampa Bay comes in at 93-59, the best record in the American League column tonight. Boston is 83-70 and trying to hold its wild card spot, five games up on Cleveland (78-75). Ranger Suarez (7-4, 3.33 ERA) starts for the Red Sox against Ian Seymour (9-6, 4.27) at Tropicana Field. Suarez is the better arm on paper, which is why the line is closer than the ten-game gap in the standings. The Rays want to keep the pressure on for a top seed. The Red Sox want to stop worrying about Cleveland.
Vegas line (ESPN odds): Rays -136, Red Sox +113. Run line Rays -1.5 (+162). Total 7 (over -112, under -107).
Also tonight
- Phillies at Mets (7:10 p.m. ET, Apple TV). Philadelphia (85-68) sends Andrew Painter against Zac Thornton. The Mets are 69-84, so this one is about the Phillies tightening their grip.
- Liberty at Lynx (7:30 p.m. ET, ION). Minnesota is 31-9, the best record in the league. New York is 24-16. A good read on whether anyone can hang with the Lynx.
- Fever at Tempo (7:30 p.m. ET, ION). Indiana (26-14) visits expansion Toronto (11-29). The Fever should handle it.
- Royals at Pirates (6:40 p.m. ET). Paul Skenes pitches. That's the reason to watch, whatever the standings say.
- Yankees at Diamondbacks (9:40 p.m. ET, YES). Gerrit Cole starts for New York (88-64) against Eduardo Rodriguez and an Arizona team at 80-73.
- Giants at Dodgers (10:10 p.m. ET, Apple TV). Tyler Glasnow gets the ball for the Dodgers (93-60) as the late game on the East Coast.
It's late September, so every game counts differently for everybody. For the Rays and Dodgers it's about seeding. For the Red Sox and Phillies it's about not giving anything back. Start in Tampa at 7:10 and stay up for Glasnow.
