Five days left in the MLB regular season and it's mostly about seeding now. The best one tonight is in Boston, where the AL Central leaders play a Red Sox team that's already in. The Rays and Yankees meet on Prime Video, the Padres visit the Dodgers late, and the Dream play the Liberty in Brooklyn.
Marquee: Guardians at Red Sox, Central lead on the line (7:00 p.m. ET, ESPN)
Cleveland (82-75) won last night's opener at Fenway 3-2, per the ESPN recap, and comes in one game ahead of the White Sox (81-76) in the AL Central. That's why this one matters more to the Guardians than to Boston. The Red Sox (84-73) clinched a playoff spot on Sunday, and MLB.com's postseason FAQ has them focused on health and getting the bullpen work before October. Sonny Gray (17-5, 2.82 ERA) starts for Boston. Foster Griffin (15-5, 3.67) goes for Cleveland. The market likes Gray and a low-scoring night. Chicago plays in Kansas City at 7:40, so check the out-of-town board.
Vegas line (ESPN odds): Red Sox -137, Guardians +113. Total 6.5 (over -119, under -101). Run line Red Sox -1.5 (+163).
Also tonight
- Rays at Yankees (7:05 p.m. ET, Prime Video). Tampa Bay (96-61) is six games up on New York (90-67) with five to play. Gerrit Cole starts for the Yankees against Ian Seymour. It's a look at a possible October matchup.
- Brewers at Phillies (6:40 p.m. ET). Milwaukee has the best record in baseball at 98-59. Logan Henderson (10-3, 2.51) faces Aaron Nola for an 87-70 Phillies team.
- White Sox at Royals (7:40 p.m. ET). The other half of the Central race. Chicago is one game back of Cleveland, and Kansas City (67-90) has nothing left to play for.
- Dream at Liberty (8:00 p.m. ET, USA Network). Atlanta (29-14) and New York (26-17) at Barclays Center, two of the league's better teams.
- Astros at Mariners (10:00 p.m. ET, ESPN). Houston is 78-79, the same record as Texas, with the AL West still undecided. George Kirby starts for Seattle.
- Padres at Dodgers (10:10 p.m. ET). Yoshinobu Yamamoto (14-8, 2.51) against Robbie Ray. The Dodgers are 97-60 and ten up on San Diego. Stay up for it anyway.
The thread tonight is the AL Central. Cleveland and Chicago both play at the same time, one game apart, with five left. Keep Fenway on and flip to Kansas City between innings.
