The World Series opens tonight in Milwaukee, and it comes with a full Friday undercard: a 12-game NBA slate in its first full week, Formula 1 in Austin, college football, and the NHL grinding through October.

Marquee: Tampa Bay Rays at Milwaukee Brewers (8:00 PM EDT, FOX)

The Rays went with Nick Martinez to open the World Series instead of leaning on a traditional ace, a bet that his mix of pitches and recent form travels better than a harder-throwing arm against this Brewers lineup. Milwaukee counters with rookie right-hander Jacob Misiorowski, whose fastball has been the story of their run to the pennant. The Brewers had the best record in baseball this year and are favored to close this one out at home.

Vegas line: Brewers -160 moneyline, Rays +162. Brewers -1.5 on the run line (+122), total set at 6.5. Source: ESPN MLB odds.

Also tonight

  • New York Knicks at Boston Celtics (7:00 PM EDT, Prime Video). One of the better early-season measuring sticks in the East. Boston is still figuring out life without Jrue Holiday-level depth on the wing, and New York wants to prove its frontcourt changes hold up against a real contender.
  • Formula 1: United States Grand Prix (1:30 PM EDT, Apple TV+). Austin hosts the penultimate stretch of the season with the constructors' fight still live. Qualifying position at COTA tends to matter more than most circuits, so watch who tops the grid.
  • Duke at Virginia (7:00 PM EDT, ESPN). Both programs are scrapping for bowl positioning in a tight ACC season, and a Friday night slot under the lights usually means more possessions and more fireworks than either team's typical Saturday pace.
  • Tampa Bay Lightning at Colorado Avalanche (9:00 PM EDT, ESPN+). Colorado is dealing with injuries on the back end, which opens things up for Tampa Bay's forwards if they can capitalize early.
  • LA Clippers at Los Angeles Lakers (10:00 PM EDT, NBA League Pass). A nightcap cross-town matchup with both rosters banged up. Worth checking the injury report close to tip before you set a lineup around it.

Everything funnels toward Milwaukee tonight. Win or lose, Game 1 sets the tone for how this World Series gets talked about for the next week, and the rest of the slate is just background noise until that first pitch.
