Tuesday's NBA board has a clean storyline: the league's last undefeated team walks into Madison Square Garden against a team that hasn't won yet. Detroit's hot start also pulls in a round of NHL and a Milwaukee-Tampa Bay matchup on FOX.
Marquee: Detroit Pistons at New York Knicks (8:00 PM EDT, NBC)
Detroit is 3-0 to start the season, and it got there without much of its frontcourt. ESPN reports that center Jalen Duren will miss at least two more weeks with a hamstring strain, which leaves Cade Cunningham to carry even more of the offense than usual. The Knicks are the opposite story: 0-3, home at the Garden, and trying to find any kind of rhythm against a team playing with house money. New York's injury report lists Jordan Alvarado as day-to-day. Vegas isn't buying a Knicks turnaround tonight.
Vegas line (ESPN): Pistons -3.5 (-115), Knicks +3.5 (-108). Total 219.5. Moneyline: Pistons +130, Knicks -155.
Also tonight
- Brooklyn Nets at Boston Celtics (7:30 PM EDT). Boston is 2-1 and still finding its identity post-Jrue Holiday trade era; Brooklyn is 0-3 and in a true rebuild year. Celtics forward Luka Bilodeau is day-to-day, Nets guard Keon Jr. is day-to-day.
- Sacramento Kings at San Antonio Spurs (8:00 PM EDT). San Antonio is 1-2 but building around Victor Wembanyama's usual two-way impact, while Sacramento is winless at 0-3 and dealing with multiple injuries, including Malik Murray and De'Aaron Simmons.
- Milwaukee Brewers at Tampa Bay Rays (8:00 PM EDT, FOX). The Rays will be without starter Shane McClanahan. A national FOX window for a matchup that doesn't usually get one.
- Boston Bruins at Carolina Hurricanes (8:00 PM EDT, ESPN). Carolina will be without Nikita Nikishin, with Mark Jankowski day-to-day. Boston comes in healthy.
- Portland Trail Blazers at Los Angeles Lakers (11:00 PM EDT, NBC, Peacock). Two of the league's hottest early starts collide on the West Coast, Portland at 2-0 and the Lakers at 3-0. Late tip, but the kind of game worth staying up for.
Detroit's 3-0 start is the real story of the night, even shorthanded. If the Pistons find a way to beat a desperate Knicks team on the road without their starting center, that's a bigger signal than the final score will show.
