Why March?
March 6th is Ghana's Independence Day. In 1957, Ghana, under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah, became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule, shedding its colonial name "British Gold Coast" and declaring itself Ghana — meaning "warrior king." That moment didn't just matter for Ghana. In the decade that followed, 30 more African nations gained independence.
How to Celebrate Ghana Month
In Ghana: Black Star Square, Accra
The main event happens every year at Independence Square (Black Star Square) in Accra — a parade featuring the armed forces, schoolchildren, and civic groups marching in red, gold, and green. Event Spotlight: Ginja with Ethan Tomas and Juls
If you know, you know. Ethan Tomas is a Ghanaian-American DJ and producer who grew up between the US and Ghana. He's the creator of Ginja — one of NYC's premier Afrobeats and Amapiano dance parties, known for selling out 1,000+ capacity venues. British-Ghanaian producer Juls brings his celebrated Tabom series into the mix. Together they've hosted cross-continental events connecting London to Brooklyn, spanning Afrobeats, Amapiano, Afrohouse, Dancehall, and more.
