JC Tretter Resigns from NFLPA

Former Cleveland Browns center JC Tretter has announced his departure from the NFL Players Association, stepping down from his role as chief strategy officer and removing himself from consideration as interim executive director following the surprise resignation of Lloyd Howell late Thursday night.
A Sudden and Personal Decision
In an exclusive interview with CBS Sports, Tretter revealed that his decision to leave the NFLPA entirely was driven by the personal toll recent events have taken on his family. "Over the last couple days, it has gotten very, very hard for my family. And that's something I can't deal with," Tretter explained.
The former NFLPA president, who had served as chief strategy officer since October, made it clear that his departure was immediate and final: "I have no interest in being [executive director]. I have no interest in being considered; I've let the executive committee know that. I'm also going to leave the NFLPA in the coming days because I don't have anything left to give the organization."
The Context Behind the Chaos
Tretter's departure comes amid significant turmoil within the NFLPA. Lloyd Howell, who had been installed as executive director just two years ago with hopes of leading the union through its next collective bargaining agreement, resigned following a series of controversies. These included a leaked collusion grievance, potential conflicts of interest, and filed expense reports for two strip club trips.
Tretter had been instrumental in Howell's original hiring, making the current situation particularly complex for the former Browns center, who has spent years advocating for union stability and professional conduct.
Embracing the Role of the Uncomfortable Truth-Teller
Throughout his tenure, Tretter acknowledged that his greatest strength was also his biggest challenge: his willingness to be disliked when necessary. "Defensive linemen did not like him on the field. NFL team owners likely did not care much for him in negotiations," and as he admitted, plenty of people within the union weren't fans either.
This approach served him well in negotiations and advocacy, but it also created friction within the organization he was trying to improve. For business leaders and entrepreneurs, Tretter's experience illustrates the lonely reality of making difficult decisions that benefit the collective, even when they're unpopular.
Dispelling the Power Play Narrative
Despite speculation that Tretter had orchestrated events to position himself as the next executive director, he firmly rejected these characterizations. In his hour-long conversation with CBS Sports, he sought to address what he called "mistruths" about his motivations, insisting there was never a Machiavellian plot to take control of the union.
Members of the NFLPA's executive committee had shown interest in Tretter taking over as interim executive director, and some media reports suggested he was mere days from getting the position.
What's Next for the NFLPA
With both the executive director and chief strategy officer positions now vacant, the NFLPA faces a leadership crisis at a critical time. The union must navigate ongoing player concerns, prepare for future collective bargaining, and restore internal stability while finding new leadership.
Tretter's departure removes one of the union's most experienced voices on labor relations and collective bargaining, creating a knowledge gap that will be difficult to fill quickly.
