For 53 years the Knicks handed New York every kind of basketball heartbreak except a parade. On Thursday, June 18, the city settled the account — confetti down the Canyon of Heroes, the franchise's first march up Broadway, and a Key to the City waiting at the end of it.
The route
The parade stepped off at 10 a.m. from Bowling Green in Lower Manhattan and moved north up Broadway through the Canyon of Heroes toward City Hall, with viewing pens opening at 6 a.m. It is the first ticker-tape parade the Knicks have ever received, and the city's first since the New York Liberty's 2024 WNBA championship — a reminder that the Canyon, once reserved for astronauts and heads of state, now belongs mostly to the teams that finally break through.
The ceremony
At noon, Mayor Zohran Mamdani hosted a celebration on City Hall Plaza and presented each member of the team with a Key to the City — the first marquee civic moment of his young mayoralty, staged in front of what officials expected to be one of the largest crowds the parade route has held. The optics are not subtle: a new mayor, a championship team, and a captive audience of millions on a Thursday morning.
The franchise
The title itself — the Knicks' first in 53 years, closed out 94-90 over the Spurs in Game 5 — is what made the morning possible, with Finals MVP Jalen Brunson as the face of it. But the parade is the part the city actually owns. A championship is won in a building in San Antonio and on a television; a parade happens on your street, in your lunch hour, with ticker tape in your hair.

A ticker-tape parade is a civic ritual a city only gets to perform when it wins, and New York had been starved of this particular one for two generations. The Knicks are the most-watched, least-rewarded brand in the NBA; Madison Square Garden monetized loyalty for decades without delivering the thing loyalty is supposed to buy.
