Mayor Zohran Mamdani is turning the World Cup into a citywide art project. The mayor, the New York New Jersey Host Committee, and the Whitney Museum of American Art launched a free, artist-designed poster activity guide distributed across all five boroughs during the tournament.
How it works
The guide was created by Rich Tu, designer of the official FIFA World Cup 2026 New York New Jersey Host City poster. New Yorkers and visitors who complete it — or show a photo of it — receive free admission to the Whitney through July 31, while supplies last. It is available in English and Spanish, distributed at watch parties, Open Streets events, and community partner sites, and downloadable online. On July 12, Tu leads a program at the Whitney with Poster House as part of Free Second Sunday and West Side Fest.
The read
It is of a piece with how Mamdani has framed the World Cup — as public infrastructure rather than a private spectacle. Where FIFA's tournament runs on dynamic pricing and $375 kits, he keeps pairing it with free, citywide access, from $50 resident tickets and Brooklyn-made jerseys to a museum pass earned by picking up a marker. The art guide costs the city little and routes World Cup energy into a cultural institution tourists already want to visit — the same affordability-first politics behind his rent freeze, applied to culture. It is soft power, municipal-style.
