Wimbledon will crown a first-time women's singles champion this weekend, and she will be Czech. Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova both won their semifinals on Thursday to set up an all-Czech final at the All England Club — the first time two players from the country will meet for the Wimbledon women's title.
In the final, Muchová lost to Linda Nosková in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.
Muchova got there the hard way. She edged Coco Gauff 6-2, 1-6, 7-6, saving a match point at 10-9 in the third-set tiebreak before closing it out 12-10 against the two-time Grand Slam champion, as CBS Sports reported. Noskova, 21, had a cleaner afternoon, beating Marta Kostyuk 6-4, 6-4 to reach the first Grand Slam final of her career.
Whoever lifts the trophy Saturday will be a first-time Wimbledon champion, and that an all-Czech final produced it says how far the women's game has opened up at the top. Muchova, a former French Open finalist, erased a match point against a two-time major winner; Noskova, 21, is into her first major final. Neither has won a Grand Slam singles title.
The men's semifinals close out Friday on Centre Court, where Novak Djokovic meets top seed Jannik Sinner and British wild card Arthur Fery faces Alexander Zverev. Gauff, meanwhile, exits a tournament where she had reached her first Wimbledon quarterfinal before running into Muchova's level.
