Swords gave way to basketballs. NINJA BASKETBALL ARMY, an NBA-sanctioned story brand directed by the Japanese creative collective NINJA BASKETBALL ANONYMOUS and led by creator Takaya Mitsunaga, launched in May with a single conceit: a parallel-universe 16th-century Japan in which fractured ninja clans pursue national unification through basketball rather than bloodshed.
It is a full world, not a logo. The project spans story, character design, and fashion, drawing equally from American basketball culture and Japanese Sengoku-era history, with a debut exhibition and pre-order event in Daikanyama, Tokyo, timed ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season. Mitsunaga says the idea is nine years old and took three years of NBA coordination to clear.
The read: the NBA has spent a decade selling itself as a global culture engine, and licensing a fan-built mythology back to its most design-literate market is the next move past jerseys and highlight reels. It is the same instinct that turned the playoff tunnel into a runway — the league treating its iconography as raw material for other people’s art, and taking a cut of the result.
