Nike is marking the 30th anniversary of the 1996 NBA Draft with the most ambitious release in the Kobe 4 Protro line so far. The Mechanic
The pack contains 14 different colorways of the Kobe 4 Protro, packaged as a blind-box drop. The shoe ships in standard Nike packaging with a gold inner wrapper that has to be torn open before the colorway is revealed. Each insole carries a number stamp — the draft pick that franchise held in 1996.
Thirteen of the 14 pairs are tied to the lottery teams that picked before the Hornets did and could have taken Kobe. The list: 76ers (pick 1, Allen Iverson), Raptors (2), Grizzlies (3), Bucks (4), Timberwolves (5), Celtics (6), Clippers (7), Nets (8), Mavericks (9), Pacers (10), Warriors (11), Cavaliers (12), and the Hornets themselves (13) — Charlotte taking Kobe before flipping him to the Lakers for Vlade Divac on draft night. The Wear-Away Upper
The 13 team pairs all start the same way: a mostly white upper. The team colors are underneath, revealed only as you wear the shoe. The Hornets pair will trade on its in-joke value as Kobe's actual draft team. The lopsidedness is what makes the format work. If every pair were equally desirable, there'd be no reason to randomize.
Where It Fits
The Kobe 4 Protro continues to be the most flexible execution platform in the Kobe line. Nike has used it for international tributes — including the FC Barcelona pair from last year that mapped Kobe's love of football onto blaugrana tones — and for narrative storytelling like the "Mambacita" Kobe 3 that dropped May 1. The Draft Pack pushes that further. It isn't a single colorway with a story attached; it's a participatory release where the buyer's wear pattern completes the design.
The release window matters. June 26 sits exactly between Game 7 of the NBA Finals (potentially) and the start of the 2026 NBA Draft week. Nike is using a sneaker drop to bookend a basketball calendar event with a basketball history reference.
