Half a billion dollars is now a number an NFL contract can clear. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs finalized a reworked deal on Wednesday worth $504.75 million through 2033 — the first contract in league history to top $500 million, per ESPN's Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport.
The numbers
The reworked deal adds two years to Mahomes's existing contract and carries $239.05 million in new money. The first four years are guaranteed at signing, and the full $504.75 million becomes guaranteed through contract mechanisms — meaning the entire deal is effectively locked in. Beginning in 2027, when the new money kicks in, it averages $64 million a year, an NFL record for annual value, and incentives and escalators can push the total to as much as $522.25 million.
A market the Chiefs keep resetting
This is the third time in six years that Mahomes and the Chiefs have rewritten the top of the quarterback market, and the franchise has now committed $689.05 million in new money to him since 2022. "Patrick is a generational talent and an elite human being, and I'm so excited he will continue to lead our team into the future," Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said. The deal was negotiated by Equity Sports CEO Chris Cabott with GM Brett Veach and the Kansas City front office.
A bet on the comeback
What makes the structure notable is the timing. Mahomes is recovering from a torn ACL and LCL suffered on December 14, 2025, and the Chiefs still chose to guarantee the largest contract in NFL history to a quarterback coming off a major knee injury — a wager on his longevity that the team expects to look smart by Week 1, when Kansas City is projected to have him available against Denver. It caps an eventful Chiefs offseason that has also seen receiver Rashee Rice serve a 30-day jail sentence and miss OTAs. That bet paid off on schedule: Mahomes was fully cleared for training camp practice on July 24, ahead of the recovery timeline doctors initially projected.
