The Philadelphia Phillies acquired infielder Luis Arraez and right-hander Caleb Kilian from the San Francisco Giants on Monday, August 3, ahead of Major League Baseball's 6 p.m. ET trade deadline. San Francisco received right-handers Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair. MLB.com, which reported the deal, ranks Marquez as San Francisco's No. 7 prospect following the trade.
Arraez is hitting .324 this season, first in the National League, with four home runs, 43 RBIs and an .800 OPS. He has drawn 25 walks against 21 strikeouts in 464 plate appearances — a 4.5% strikeout rate, by far the lowest among the 150 qualified hitters in baseball. He won three consecutive batting titles from 2022 through 2024 and becomes a free agent after this season.
The trade moves three Phillies infielders
Arraez takes over at second base, moving three of the Phillies' four infield positions. Interim manager Don Mattingly is moving Bryce Harper to right field, a position he has not played since 2022, when he suffered a right elbow injury. Alec Bohm shifts from third base to first, and Bryson Stott moves from second to third.
Harper pointed to his outfielder's glove and said it was there "just in case they make a trade."
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski pivoted to Arraez amid what it called an underwhelming market for right-handed-hitting outfielders, and that the move uproots three-fourths of the Phillies infield. CBS Sports graded the deal a B+ for Philadelphia.
Philadelphia also added a left-handed reliever
In a separate deal the same day, the Phillies acquired left-hander Brooks Raley from the New York Mets for outfielder John Spikerman, the Mets' No. 26 prospect, and right-hander Luke Gabrysh. Raley is 5-5 with a 1.96 ERA, 40 strikeouts and 15 walks across 41⅓ innings this season.
The two moves land on a deadline day that has already produced a two-time Cy Young winner changing teams, with the Dodgers acquiring Tarik Skubal from the Tigers, and a franchise catcher moving inside the AL East, with the Red Sox acquiring Adley Rutschman from Baltimore. Monday's full slate is in our games to watch for August 3.
