Ryan Gosling's 'Project Hail Mary' Targets $71M Debut, Amazon MGM's Biggest Opening Ever

Amazon MGM Studios' Project Hail Mary is tracking for a $71 million domestic opening weekend, which would be the biggest box office debut of 2026 and a new record for the studio. The film collected $12 million in Thursday preview screenings — the highest preview total of the year, and the second-best ever for a non-franchise film behind It ($13.5 million).

The film stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship light-years from Earth with no memory of how he got there. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from a screenplay by Drew Goddard — who adapted Andy Weir's previous novel The MartianProject Hail Mary carries a $200 million production budget and is opening in 82 markets globally. It currently holds a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

If projections hold, the opening would surpass Amazon MGM's previous record of $58.3 million, set by Creed III in 2023. A global opening north of $100 million is also in view.
