Game 5 will turn on whether the Thunder can keep Wembanyama out of the paint without selling out their perimeter coverage. Through four games, single coverage has not worked, and the Spurs have punished every help rotation by swinging the ball to corner shooters.
SGA's Supporting Cast
The Spurs spent Game 4 guarding Shai Gilgeous-Alexander one-on-one and refusing to send extra help on drives. The result: 19 points on a quiet night for the reigning MVP, and an offense that looked stuck when no second creator stepped forward. The Thunder will play Game 5 without Ajay Mitchell (calf), with Thomas Sorber (knee) out, and with Jalen Williams questionable on a hamstring — leaving Chet Holmgren and the bench unit to find the offense between SGA's touches.
What Game 5 Decides
The winner sits one home win from the NBA Finals. The loser plays a must-win Game 6 in San Antonio on Thursday. Either way, New York is watching. The Knicks clinched their first Finals appearance since 1999 on Monday and have eight days of rest banked before tip-off June 3 on ABC.
