Last week, we wrote that Wembanyama was ready for the playoffs and the rest of the NBA might not be. He didn't prove us wrong.
On Sunday night at Frost Bank Center, Victor Wembanyama scored 35 points in his postseason debut — the most by any Spur in franchise history making their first playoff appearance. Tim Duncan's previous record was 32. Duncan was in the building to watch it fall.

The Numbers
35 points. 13-of-21 from the field. 5-of-6 from three. 5 rebounds. 2 blocks. 33 minutes. He dropped 21 in the first half — an NBA record for points in the opening half of a playoff debut. He also became the first player in league history to score 35 or more in a postseason debut while connecting on at least five three-pointers.
On the defensive end: Portland scored zero points on 11 possessions where Wembanyama was the primary defender. Deni Avdija led the Blazers with 30 points, nine rebounds, and five assists — legitimately excellent — and it still wasn't close.
What It Means Beyond the Box Score
This was the first Spurs playoff game without Gregg Popovich on the sideline since 1999 — a run that covered 170 playoff wins and five NBA championships. It was San Antonio's first postseason appearance since 2019. David Robinson and Tim Duncan were courtside for it.
The passing-of-the-torch framing writes itself, but the truth is more interesting than the metaphor. Wembanyama isn't inheriting a dynasty — he's building something new inside an organization that has always known how to build. The Spurs went 62-20 this season. They're the No. 2 seed in the West. And they have a 21-year-old who just became the most dominant player in the first round of the 2026 playoffs by a significant margin.
Every contender in the Western Conference watched that game. None of them liked what they saw.
