The WNBA has suspended Toronto Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello without pay for one game for what the league called "an inappropriate comment she made regarding Angel Reese of the Atlanta Dream," according to a statement released Saturday. Reese answered on social media, quoting a post that objected to a Black woman being called a species and adding "ARE WE SURPRISED?!" with a clown emoji, tagging Brondello. The coach apologized in a series of posts the next day. "Angel, I'm sorry. Last night, in the emotion of the moment after Nyara's injury, I used a phrase that I shouldn't have used, and I take full responsibility for that," she wrote. She said her frustration "was with the officiating, but my words unfairly put the focus on you," and that she understood "my words carried an impact beyond what I intended, particularly for Black women in our league, and I'm deeply sorry for that."

Brondello is Australian, and "protected species" is used in Australian sport to describe a player who draws favorable treatment from officials — context raised widely in coverage of the remark. The usage is real, and it is also beside the point of how the sentence was received: "species" applied to a Black woman in an American league carries a dehumanizing history that does not require the speaker's intent to activate it. Her own apology concedes the distance between what she meant and what landed.

The WNBA's statement never uses the word race. It calls the remark "an inappropriate comment," cites "the highest standards of professionalism and respect," and stops there. One game without pay is real discipline, and it is also the least escalatory version available: enough to establish that something happened, without naming what. The league's growth has been built on the visibility and cultural weight of its Black stars, and its new CBA and expansion wave put a franchise in Toronto in the first place — a team built under general manager Monica Wright Rogers with Brondello hired as its first head coach. The distance between the language the league reached for and the reading its players gave the moment the audio circulated is what the statement leaves open. Reese did not wait for a translation. She had already answered in three words.
