The 2026 World Cup leaves the group stage behind on June 28, and the bracket it enters has never existed before. For the first time, the tournament's knockout phase begins with a Round of 32 — 32 teams, 16 single-elimination matches — before the field narrows to the familiar Round of 16. South Africa, runner-up in Group A, opens it against Canada at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, the first of a knockout run that ends July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Why a Round of 32 exists now
The extra round is the direct consequence of FIFA's expansion from 32 to 48 teams. A 48-team field produces 12 groups instead of eight, and advancing only the group winners and runners-up would leave 24 teams in the knockout draw — an awkward number for a clean bracket. FIFA's fix was to add the eight best third-place finishers, pushing the knockout field to 32 and inserting a brand-new opening round. The result is more matches, more host-city dates, and a longer path to the trophy than any World Cup winner has ever had to walk.
What it changes
The read: the Round of 32 is not simply more soccer — it rewrites the tournament's risk math. Every contender now faces an additional survive-or-die match before the stage where favorites historically take over, and the third-place backdoor means a team can stumble through the group stage and still reach the knockouts, rewarding the deepest field FIFA has ever assembled while giving giants one more chance to trip. For the co-host United States, that math broke favorably: the USMNT won Group D and drew Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 on July 1, avoiding a tougher seed. Others were not so lucky early — Bosnia arrived in the knockouts on the back of a brutal group, including a night when Switzerland scored five goals in 15 minutes to win 4-1.
Sixteen matches over four days will cut the field in half. For a tournament being staged across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the expanded bracket is also a commercial feature, not a bug: more knockout games mean more sold-out NFL stadiums and more must-watch windows before the Round of 16 even begins.
