Tuesday's Champions League round of 16 second legs delivered the kind of night that redraws the European football map. Two Premier League clubs — Chelsea and Manchester City — exited the competition, while Arsenal advanced to the quarterfinals. The results were not really surprises, but the manner in which they unfolded was.
Chelsea entered the second leg down 5-2 to PSG after a brutal first leg. Any hope of a comeback dissolved within 14 minutes when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Bradley Barcola each scored, effectively ending the tie before the match had a chance to breathe. PSG are through and look like one of the most dangerous sides left in the draw.
Manchester City's exit was in some ways worse. Real Madrid had posted a Federico Valverde hat trick in the first leg, leaving City needing a near-miraculous result at the Etihad. Instead, Bernardo Silva picked up his first Champions League red card in 104 appearances after handling on the goal line, and Vinícius Júnior punished the resulting penalty. The final aggregate was 5-1 to Madrid. It was a comfortable elimination for a City side that has been navigating a turbulent season.
Arsenal's night was the bright spot for English football. Goals from Eberechi Eze — his first in Champions League football — and Declan Rice helped the Gunners knock out Bayer Leverkusen across the two legs. Eze's goal in particular felt like a statement of arrival for a player who has quietly become one of the most important presences in Mikel Arteta's system. Arsenal remain the last Premier League club in the competition, and the quarterfinal bracket sets up an interesting run toward Budapest.
The night's most theatrical result had nothing to do with an English club. Sporting Lisbon, down three goals to Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt on aggregate, won the second leg 5-0 to advance with a 5-3 aggregate. It was only the fifth time in Champions League history a team has overturned a three-plus goal deficit in a knockout round. Wednesday's second legs continue with Barcelona vs. Newcastle and Liverpool vs. Galatasaray.
