Culture
The 83rd Venice International Film Festival opened Wednesday night on the Lido with the world premiere of Danny Boyle's Ink, which drew a four-minute standing ovation from the black-tie crowd. The film is set in 1969 and covers Rupert Murdoch's acquisition of The Sun and his hiring of editor Larry Lamb to rebuild it into a populist tabloid that could pass the Daily Mirror. Guy Pearce plays Murdoch, Jack O'Connell plays Lamb, and Claire Foy plays Jules Davies. It is adapted from James Graham's stage play.
The distributor is Netflix, which is putting the film in select theaters December 11 before streaming January 8, 2027. Reviews were largely positive, and Deadline's critics roundup quotes Vulture's Bilge Ebiri describing it as Citizen Kane by way of Trainspotting.
Venice 83 runs through September 12, with 20 films in competition and Maggie Gyllenhaal serving as jury president. Toronto follows September 10 to 20.
