NHTSA opened an investigation into Tesla's Cybercab on September 4, hours after the first units reached the streets of Austin. The agency's audit query examines the process and technical data Tesla used to self-certify that the Cybercab meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards — specifically whether Tesla was correct that certain standards do not apply to a vehicle built without a steering wheel, brake pedal, accelerator, or mirrors. Roughly 1,000 of them are deployed, bookable through Tesla's robotaxi app, per TechCrunch.
U.S. vehicle safety rules let manufacturers attest to their own compliance rather than seek pre-approval from the agency. The audit query asks Tesla to produce the process and data behind that attestation.
Elsewhere, Nvidia agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, expected to close in the first half of 2027 pending regulatory approval.
