Fear of God has launched a dedicated collection with the estate of Barkley L. Hendricks for the NBA — a collaboration that puts the late painter's work directly into the fabric of Jerry Lorenzo's ongoing league partnership. Hendricks (1945–2017) is one of the most significant American painters of the 20th century, known for life-sized portraits of Black Americans rendered with Old Master technique and the full swagger of street life. He was also a devoted basketball player whose relationship with the sport ran deep enough that he made a separate body of abstract work about it — paintings of hoops, nets, and the geometry of the ball itself. The fit here isn't manufactured.

Fear of God has been building toward this kind of institutional legitimacy since announcing its multi-year NBA and WNBA partnership in 2024. What started as premium team apparel — heavyweight fleece, tonal palettes, restrained co-branding — has expanded into something with a clearer cultural argument. Pairing with the Hendricks estate signals that Lorenzo isn't just making gear. He's making a case that basketball culture belongs in the same conversation as fine art, and that the two have always shared more than people acknowledge.
The collection is available now at fearofgod.com.
